You can feel a sense of power, a primitive, deep connection. Also Delphi (in Greece), which is a ruined landscape but also the most sacred, spiritual place. I’ve seen people standing there with tears in their eyes. Or Walter De Maria, who did The Lightning Field-a grid of poles 20 feet high in the high desert of New Mexico.ĪC:One of the most powerful spaces I’ve been to is the Pantheon in Rome. Like Donald Judd, who was constantly asking what is the boundary between a sculpture and the place where it sits? Robert Irwin, early in his career, suggested space by running a violet chain-link fence through eucalyptus trees so it becomes part of the landscape. Do you have favorite sculptors?ĪC: The people who influenced me are minimalist sculptors, mainly working in the West, who really have thought about their art not as a piece in a museum but as an environment. When we get to a more rural landscape, then I’m thinking of the zone around the house as being very architecturally defined.Ĭochran often uses reflecting pools, here flanked by 100-year-old olive trees at Walden Studios, a vineyard and arts facility in Sonoma County, California. So I’m thinking a lot about how those edges define space and about screening and light. On a suburban project, I’m really thinking about the edges of the property, about how to fool the eye to make the space seem more permeable with a larger environment. The landscapes are generally more hardscapes, almost idealized, where we bring in the sense of nature in a very controlled but not-trying-to-copy-nature kind of way. It really becomes an outdoor room connected to the architecture. Urban landscapes are about architectural spaces. GD: How do setting and size shape a project?ĪC: We work on everything from urban courtyards to vineyard/hotel complexes that are hundreds of acres, and each takes a very different approach. Left: Cochran’s ability to blur the line between natural and man-made environments is evident at Stone Edge Farm, a Sonoma residence, olive grove, winery, and garden. Combine that with a climate where everything grows and where people spend a lot of their time outside: They’re invested emotionally in their landscape. I don’t think it’s an accident that Silicon Valley or Berkeley in the ’60s happened in California. Coming to the Bay Area was very freeing I realized I’m able to do more here. This was the culture of Thomas Church and Sunset magazine, where people could name a landscape architect. What happened?Īndrea Cochran: When I first came here, someone asked what I did and it was the first time I had ever told anybody I was a landscape architect when they didn’t say, “My holly bush has dots on the leaves.” I didn’t have to explain that I design gardens I’m not a horticulturist. Garden Design: You moved to the West Coast 30 years ago with the plan to stay just a few years. A collection of her work, Andrea Cochran Landscapes, by Mary Myers is available from Princeton Architectural Press. Sourcebook: Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture is based in San Francisco (415/503-0060) ). Our slide show of Cochran's landscapes is accompanied with a Q&A with Cochran. Garden Design caught up with Cochran recently to dig below the surface of her clean, crisp designs in order to better understand the aesthetics and process of this walking force of nature. Last July, she collaborated with the architect/artist Susan Narduli in a competition-winning design for the San Francisco Veterans Memorial, which is slated to open in the fall of 2013. Like her work, Cochran is both elegant and warm, and that delightful paradox shows up in projects that include museum sculpture gardens, housing project courtyards, and children’s play spaces. Her highly sculptural and modernist designs consistently garner media attention and awards since 2004, in fact, the only year she didn’t win an honor from the American Society of Landscape Architects was the one in which they asked her to be a juror. Landscape architect Andrea Cochran may have grown up in suburban New Jersey, but she strongly identifies with the West Coast, where she’s lived and practiced for the last 30 years. The photo was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898-1995), the great Time-Life photographer who specialized in capturing spontaneous images that told an entire story, the best-known example being a sailor’s passionate embrace of a nurse in Times Square on V-J Day in 1945. In the background, four stately trees seem to march in a procession of their own. Seven children bounce along behind him in ragged single-file, their own heads thrown back in imitation. It shows an exuberant drum major-head thrust back, right leg thrust forward at an impossible angle-marching from right to left across a close-cut field. On October 30, 1950, Life magazine carried what is arguably the most widely seen and possibly the best photograph ever made at the University of Michigan. Eisenstaedt’s prominent reputation increased significantly as a staff photographer for Life, with more than 90 pictures featured on the magazine’s covers and more than 2,500 photo stories published. Alfred Eisenstaedt was best known for his candid portraits of politicians, celebrities and fascinating street shots, but his most famous work remains the iconic VJ Day in Times Square, an indelible photograph capture an American sailor grabbing and kissing a young nurse on August 14, 1945. Well your speakers are really the 2nd weak link here, and not really your amplifier.īecause if they, your PA speakers sound bad, then no good amplifier or audio source is going to make them sound any better !!!Īnd so your 3rd weak link naturally in your audio chain is your Power Amplifier.ĭon't get me wrong here, their All Important Together here in making good audio sound quality, but what Sound Quality are You looking for, also in your Budget range/cost, so that is really the question here ? The 1st weak link in your chain of good audio quality is really your equipment you use plain and simple: meaning bad A/C Line Power and or Line Noise and Grounding Problems like Hum Noise, your Mixer, the Mixer Source, Audio and Speaker cables, CD player, Record Player, Tape deck, MP3's and Loss of Quality Compressed Audio, E.Q unit etc. Most No Name stuff has power ratings that are outrageous like 1,000 watts power handling and 120 db signal to noise ratio, do not believe it for Once in your life', unless of course it is a reputable brand name, but even then be careful' why ?. It can spell Doom for your Good Sound you obviously want ! Headphones are optimally suited for analyzing tonal artifacts in a recording but completely distort distance perception.Click to expand.Your no name brand PA speakers might be a problem, there is so many " No Name Brand Speakers " out there made in China by the lowest Contractor Bid, just like here in America, doesn't that make you feel all warm and cozy inside ?! "Headphones are completely unsuited for judging the spatial rendering of a stereo recording that is intended for loudspeaker playback. Money doesn't buy pleasure ever."-Alan Watts "It's enormously important to understand that there is absolutely no possibility of having any pleasure in life at all without skill. Unfortunately very few of our current genre of acoustic tests have had this kind of introspection." - Geddes It is the perceived sound quality that matters not the measured quality – unless that measurement has been scaled and correlated to subjective perception through valid psychoacoustic tests. "Blind reliance on measurements can be misleading ‐ one needs to tie those measurements back to subjective perception. The room response gives a picture of the steady state SPL, where sound generation and sound dissipation in the room have reached their equilibrium." -Linkwitz The resulting curves must not be taken as a 1:1 representation of what is heard as loudness at different frequencies. " The room response must be averaged to recognize trends in the summation of direct and reflected signals at the microphone. are welcome.Īny donations are much appreciated using : But that it delivers way, way above its cost point.Īs always, questions, comments, recommendations, etc. Not because it has great measured performance as far as noise and distortion. I am going to recommend the Pyle PT8000CH. The PT8000CH won't be my main choice for a high-performance 2-channel system but for surround duty and certainly multi-room amplification, it seems fine. You are paying almost nothing for this amplifier (the case alone could cost you this much!) yet you get way above a broken design. The amplifier protection and ability to handle complex loads is excellent. Distortion and noise are rather high though and rank well below our average. Massive power supply courtesy of dual toroidal transformers powers the 8 channels well, allowing the amplifier to meet spec. The build quality of this 8-channel amplifier seems quite substantial. Testing at 1 ohm resulted in momentary shutdown. At 2 ohm though, it starts to complain, dropping its output voltage by nearly half. This is quite robust! At both 4 and 8 ohms, the amp doesn't care if the load is reactive or not. After the first term, you will be automatically renewed at the renewal price (currently $109.99/yr). Wolfgang (Eds.), Collective violence (pp. “She’ll wake up one of these days and find she’s turned into a nigger”: Passing through hybridity. In this chapter, Billard explores these tensions, challenging the application of the label “deception” by the social majority to those of marginal identities, particularly inconspicuous ones, as it serves to delegitimate authentic identities and police the boundaries of social hierarchies. As such, media discourses surrounding transgender people who “pass” justify punishment for their deception through physical violence. This chapter raises important questions about the nature of deception and status of deceiver, analyzing media discourses surrounding instances of transgender “passing.” These discourses position transgender people as deceivers who live out their genders to seduce heterosexuals, scrutinizing their appearances for signs of their “true gender.” Contradictorily, successful “passing” as cisgender legitimates a transgender person’s gender identity, but also renders them more malicious in their deception. In today’s world Braddock would be labeled as a boxer who underachieved and didn’t get the most out of his talent until unexpectedly winning the biggest fight of his career. “When the nation was on its knees and everybody was in despair in helplessness and hopelessness, Braddock brought them to their feet because he gave them faith through his spirit that you can rise above your circumstance if you get a second chance,” King said. But he wasn’t a great fighter.”īraddock’s attraction for boxers and filmmakers is more about what Braddock symbolized. “He was a left-handed jabber,” Sugar said. “He couldn’t but his way into the top 10 heavyweights of all time,” says boxing historian Bert Sugar, who admires Braddock the man, but doesn’t think much of Braddock the boxer. Braddock, still in shape from working on the docks, won both in surprising fashion.īut that doesn’t make Braddock a great fighter. His fortunes turned when his manager, Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti in the movie), got him into two heavyweight fights at the last minute. In the book “Cinderella Man,” Schaap describes how Braddock was literally down to his last dollar, having spent his monthly relief of $24 paying bills for his family. With his wife (played by Renee Zellweger in the film) and kids to feed, Braddock focused more on earning a few bucks unloading freight at the New Jersey docks. He would lose 18 of his next 30 fights and eventually have his licensed temporarily revoked. Yet Braddock lost a 15-round decision at Yankee Stadium and seemingly much of his motivation. He grew up wanting to be a fireman or a train engineer, but became a highly regarded amateur boxer who turned pro at age 21 and worked his way up to a title shot with Tommy Loughran. “That’s what gave us the Brown Bomber.”Ī rugged Irish kid who grew up in North Bergen, N.J., Braddock didn’t seem destined for fame. “He broke the color barrier,” boxing promoter Don King says of Braddock. Braddock also managed to gain a controversial bit of financial security in the process. The fight – which was opposed by the boxing commission and had to be cleared by a federal judge – helped integrate boxing, and ended up with Louis becoming heavyweight champion, a title he held longer than any man. A couple of years later, in 1937, Braddock let Joe Louis fight him for the title – the first champion to defend his perch against a black man in 29 years. It’s like “Seabiscuit” on two legs.īut in real life, the tale didn’t end there. The film also dwells on the way Braddock, played by Russell Crowe, gave hope to the downtrodden during the Depression, by working his way back out of the bread lines. It focuses on the title bout with defending champ Max Baer – a fight in which Braddock faced 10-1 odds, the biggest underdog in heavyweight championship history, according to “Cinderella Man,” a biography by ESPN correspondent Jeremy Schaap. The Ron Howard movie, opening this Friday, charts the rise and fall and rise again of James Braddock, a Depression-era boxer who fought his way out of poverty to claim the heavyweight championship of the world. PERHAPS the most interesting story about “Cinderella Man” is the one the filmmakers left out. |
